Beyond the BasicsThe NOSORH Grant Writing Institute: Beyond the Basics is a comprehensive, virtual training program designed to help rural grant seekers and program managers advance their grantsmanship skills. Led by experienced instructors, this Institute offers targeted strategies and tools to elevate your grant-seeking and program management efforts. Through five engaging sessions, participants will gain insights on effective grantsmanship, strategic funding relationships, efficient application processes, project accountability, and long-term sustainability. This course provides a unique opportunity for those with foundational experience to refine their approach, strengthen organizational capacity, and achieve sustainable impact.
Note: Previous participation in NOSORH’s Grant Writing Basics Institute is encouraged to maximize learning outcomes.
Intended Audience
Rural grant seekers and program managers with some experience in grant seeking and grant program management.
Instructors
- Teryl Eisinger has over 25 years of grant management experience, focusing on rural health and community development. She is a respected leader and passionate advocate for rural and underserved communities.
- Lynette Dickson, with over 25 years of experience managing grant-funded programs, is a trusted advisor to rural health clinics, hospitals, community-based organizations, and State Offices of Rural Health. She skillfully guides them through evolving funding requirements while ensuring program accountability.
Course Content
The institute includes five 90-minute sessions (held on Tuesdays and Thursdays) starting January 7, 2025. Sessions run from 3:00 to 4:30 pm ET.

Session 1: January 7, 2025
Grantsmanship: What Does it Mean for Your Organization and Community?
Successfully securing resources to meet community needs is a collaborative effort that requires communication and innovation. The session will help participants understand grantsmanship and provide techniques for developing partnerships and resources to be successful in grant-seeking and management. Participants will receive an organizational self-assessment tool to ensure grant readiness.
Session 2: January 9, 2025
Getting Strategic: Setting Your Sights on Funding Relationships and Opportunities
Successful rural organizations recognize that grantsmanship is more than writing one grant application after another and chasing the dollars. This session introduces strategies to help participants focus on proactive funding relationships and identify grant opportunities from various funders, including government agencies and philanthropic organizations.
Session 3: January 14, 2025
Lessons in Efficiency and Effectiveness: How Not to Give up Everything Else to Write Grant Applications
Rural health organizations often lack the capacity to hire full-time grant-seeking staff. In this session, participants will learn methods to manage the demands of grant writing under time constraints, maximizing the return on investment for each application. We’ll explore resources to establish efficient and effective accountability, including uses for AI, time management tools, and logic models.
Session 4: January 16, 2025
Accountability: You Got the Grant – Now What?
Ensuring the accountability of the project applicant organization, partners, and community is essential to effective grantsmanship. In this session, participants will learn how to implement key components of the grant application, such as the budget, evaluation, and work plans. We’ll introduce budget tracking tools and resources that participants can readily adopt for their organization.
Session 5: January 21, 2025
Sustainability: After the Grant Funding – Now What?
Effective grantsmanship requires rural organizations to strategize beyond the grant funding period, ensuring they remain responsive to both community needs and funder requirements. This session will guide participants to think past just submitting the grant application by the deadline. Participants will receive resources to help them identify and implement appropriate sustainability practices to support ongoing grantsmanship success.
+ Technology & System Requirements
Participants in this institute will utilize iSpring, an online Learning Management System (LMS), to join live sessions and access handouts, presentations, and recorded content. This platform also facilitates communication with course instructors. Session recordings will be accessible for playback within 24 hours of the live event.
Only those registered with the Beyond the Basics Institute will receive a unique iSpring login, granting them access to sessions and course materials. Non-compliance with registration requirements may result in restricted access. Participants will receive an email invitation with login details by January 3, 2025.
